His birthday is the first week of May, and for several decades now, the Fabrizio family has put on a celebration to toast their big day.
Walking a rich tradition to fruition, Claudio Fabrizio and his family use ancient and modern ingredients that run from every part of Italy to China to produce their delicious cakes, ices and sundaes.
The family started out in 1893, when the siblings decided they would operate a cake shop. Throwing together the one-off layers, fruits and recipes and balancing them all with thin crusts has become the Fabrizio family business. Today, eight generations later, a happy tradition continues, despite the challenges of a constantly changing food industry.
Walking across the street from the family shop, Fabrizio is mesmerized by the delicious sweets they are serving out of the window and murmurs about the family’s passion for making cakes. “You know we like to give orders even at 8 a.m.” But if you have to know, don’t ask — “usually we’re running out of ingredients and cakes about an hour after we’re opened.”
Says Claudine: “We’re just always making something” and she is never happier than when someone tastes their treats for the first time, but like any business, challenges and speed bumps are only the price of doing business. At dinner with their family, you can find diners enjoying a sweet Corn Pudding topped with whipped cream and their famous Sicilian cake, which Claudine’s mother and son hand make every single day.
But with eight generations under one roof, there can be chaos trying to keep up with the current trends, and that doesn’t help your recipe or the customer experience.
